The hashtag walang forever became a hit in the Philippines last year. You'd see people using the hashtag on a daily basis - may it be in a conversation, prints on shirts, text stickers on cars, wallpaper on phones and other gadgets, a story or title of a book, and mostly, as a joke or a tease (or weirdly, a comfort) to give a friend who just got his or her heart broken. So it's no surprise that film producers would also come up with a movie about it. What's surprising is that... this was actually a good movie!
I was finally able to watch it earlier today. I wanted to watch it on the first day of the MMFF 2015 but unfortunately, it was not available in SM Dasmarinas, It was only earlier this year when SM Dasma cinema finally showed the movie in their theaters.
I became interested because the trailer was very funny. Having Jennylyn in the movie, I already sensed success since her last film entry for MMFF 2014, English Only Please, became a hit also. Let's just say I had high expectations for this movie because of her and I'm super happy this film exceeded my expectations.
The movie started where Pamela Baranda was interviewing Mia (Jennylyn Mercado), a well-known rom-com movie scriptwriter. As she was being interviewed, several scenes from different movies, which were her creations, were flashed. Quickly after those scenes, her and Ethan's (Jericho Rosales) scenes were also showed displaying similar, if not exactly the same, events that happened in their lives or relationship. She tells Pamela that most of her creations were based from her experiences, her friends' experiences, the experiences of her friends' friend or sometimes, from strangers she meets in coffee shops.
One of the things I like about this movie was that it wasn't pilit (forced). Their relationship was well laid out to viewers. They did not need to insert the typical LQ (love quarrel) scenes just to establish some kind of conflict. Even how they met was very realistic! You know how guys do simple things to start a conversation with a girl? Yup! It's that lifelike! It's something refreshing from the usual destiny kind of shit love story.
Their sweet moments too were wonderfully controlled. Unlike other recent rom-com movies that need tons of banat lines and hulog-dapa-dulas-bangga scenarios, just so the girl would fall on the guy or vice versa, and make it a kilig thing, most of their sweet moments were just gestures; less scripts, more actions. Isn't it what we mostly appreciate and remember?
It was also refreshing to watch a movie where the couple breaks up due to priority reasons and not because of a third-wheel. It's amazing how independent both characters were. They handled their breakups well. No suicidal drama or even end-of-my-world kind of thing. They broke up, moved on with their separate lives and led their way to each other again not by coincidence but because of their network... their circle of friends.
This movie showed how to fall madly in love, how we can easily get hurt and how easy it is to actually reach out to people who we had gaps with. All we need to really do is lower our pride, apologize, forgive and let go of the past. Life's too short to hold grudges! As I always say.
In between scenes, I was (and still am) amazed at how they can smoothly insert drama and comedy! The comedy was light but very entertaining. Kudos to both the scriptwriter(s) and actors/actresses. The drama was not that heavy in the beginning but it was on the latter part. It was a big twist actually. I remember hearing the elder men behind me saying how ashamed they are for crying. Haha!
Some might hate the ending as its not a happily ever after. But for me, I quite liked it because it was a reality we all have to face anyway. It teaches viewers to look at the brighter side of things. And that #walangforever really depends on how we choose to perceive it.
I believe this is the first time Jennylyn and Jericho were partnered. They make a good love team, I must commend. They have chemistry and they look comfortable with each other on their scenes.
Jennylyn is, as always, sexy and beautiful. I honestly can't remember how many times I uttered the words "Ang ganda nya." (She's beautiful). She can well portray both a jologs and sosyal role. Jericho on the other hand has that morenong pogi appeal. For some reason, I find his acting really sincere especially when he was crying in this movie. Even without his lines, just seeing him cry made me cry as well. Or am I just like my lolo in this post who is such a cry baby? Hehe!
Overall, this was a great movie! It was worth my time and money which costed me Php195 (it was supposed to be Php205, but because I have an ePlus card, I got a discount) to watch this. I even want to watch it again just so I can jot down the lines I loved from this movie. Haha!
If you happen to see this still in the cinema near you and you haven't seen it yet, I suggest you do! I haven't seen Honor thy Father but based on the ones I have seen, and based on the reviews of other people, this is one movie that has content. No wonder they have won most of the major awards for the MMFF 2015 (Best Picture, Fernando Poe Jr. Memorial Award for Excellence, Best Actor: Jerico Rosales, Best Actress: Jennylyn Mercado, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Story).
